My Language Journey:

My passion for languages started when I took my first English class as a child. In Mexico, English is taught as a second language to children early in school. The subject fascinated me. I was beyond excited with the possibility of sounding like a native English speaker, just like the actors and actresses I saw in the movies I adored. Despite my enthusiasm and excitement, I did not do well in English class.  At least, not at first.

Immediately after high school, I moved to Florianopolis, Brazil to participate in the Rotary Exchange Program. I lived there for one incredible year. I met amazing people, learned how to dance Samba, and learned Portuguese. In Brazil I experienced the natural, fun and easy way to learn a foreign language! It was so natural, fun and easy learning through person-to-person conversations and focusing on topics that interested me. Learning Portuguese this way awoke my childhood desire to master English and pushed this ship to sea on a language journey!

After Brazil I moved to Montreal, Canada. I quickly realized that those tedious hours spent at school in English classes were neither productive nor efficient. To improve my English (and later my French), I decided to take matters into my own hands, and develop my own language learning strategies.

In a few short months, using my at-home language learning methods and strategies, I went from being afraid to ask for directions in English to discussing movie plots in English with friends.  In less than a year’s time, I applied for and was acceptable into the English-only Fine Arts (Theater) program at the University of Concordia in Montreal, Canada.  I was the only Spanish girl accepted into the university’s theatre program that year.  After graduating from the University of Concordia, I started working in films and commercials and learned to master various accents!

Never one to sit still, after graduation I also challenged myself to learn my fourth language on my language journey: French. I used the same methods and strategies I developed to learn English. In a few months, I was able to communicate in French.  Today, I am fluent in French.

I know the feeling of frustration from not being able to communicate or understand a foreign language.  I know the feeling of disappointment of spending countless hours trying to learn a new language and seemingly going nowhere.  I know how hard it is to motivate yourself to learn a new language when the learning process doesn’t excite you.  I know these things because I’ve experienced them too.  But I also know the feelings of happiness and accomplishment when you get it!  When you find yourself amazed and stunned at what you know, what you understand, what you can say, and in such a short period of time.

Let me show you the way. Let me take you on an enjoyable and fun journey to reach your language goals!
